July 31, 2020

Dear RSD Families,

I trust you are enjoying these warm July days and working hard to stay safe and healthy as we continue to navigate the resurgence of COVID-19.

As you know, I have committed to sharing fall reopening information as it becomes available. Today all schools in our county received a directive from the Thurston County Public Health Department notifying us that due to the rising rates of transmission in all Thurston County communities, all schools will need to open using a remote learning model for the majority of our students this fall. *

Therefore, we are now planning for our students to begin the 2020-21 school year with a more robust and enhanced remote learning model.  The year will begin with training for students and families on how to optimize your child(ren)’s remote learning experience.  Specific dates and details will be forthcoming.

Rochester’s Remote Learning 2.0

  • Chromebook available for checkout by each student
  • Options for families without internet access
  • Daily attendance taken based on student engagement with their assignments
  • Consistent location to access online assignments
  • Instruction and assignments will be based on priority learning standards
  • Increased interaction with teachers
  • 6-12 students will earn and receive letter grades
  • Course completion and credit awarded based on demonstration of student learning
  • Training for parents/caregivers
  • Additional supports for students with special needs
  • Help desk support available M-F for technology and assignment questions

All students should have a deep sense of belonging and contentedness within our classrooms, schools and the district.  Because of this, it will be our priority to build relationships as we nurture the learning of our students fully online, or when safe to do so, through hybrid or in-person models.  We look forward to continuing many of our Warrior traditions, and adding new and engaging experiences.

Our staff is committed to delivering a high-quality education to the students of Rochester.  Through collaboration and a commitment to our common purpose of creating safe, caring, respectful school environments, Rochester’s students will continue to learn at high levels, find their passion, and thrive.

I will provide additional updates and details on the specifics of our distance learning models as we move forward. We are Warriors and we are all in this together!

Sincerely,
Kim Fry

*Schools will be allowed to open their campus to students/families in groups of five (5) or less to conference, provide specialized student instruction or necessary services, as long as safety precautions are in place.  Additional information will be forthcoming.

Rochester School District Board of Directors approved the following tentative school start up plan.

RSD School Start-Up Plan for Fall of 2020*

IF ABLE TO MEET IN PERSON, Rochester School District will use the following hybrid model:

K-5 students will attend school daily Monday through Friday. The tentative school hours are from 8:30 AM -2:15 PM.  K-5 students will be responsible for completing physical education (PE), music and art at home.  A variety of options/resources/supports will be provided to assist families in fulfilling these requirements.

6-12 students will attend at school two days a week on a rotational schedule.  The tentative hours for RMS are 9:20 AM-3:10 PM.  The tentative hours for RHS are 9:30 AM-3:20 PM.

  • 6-12 Students will be split into two groups (Blue & Gold)
  • The Blue group will attend Mondays & Wednesdays
  • The Gold group will attend Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • Students will be assigned to either the Blue or the Gold group in August.
  • Students will be responsible for 5 days of learning: two (2) on campus and three (3) remote learning days.

Additional on campus or remote learning support may be made available to students with individualized educational plans or other specialized needs.

Parents/guardians will decide if having your child(ren) attend in the school building is a practical option for your family.  If it is not, RSD will be offering a remote-only option for the 2020-21 school year.

RSD will finalize our staffing assignments, bus routes, and foodservice arrangements based on the decisions our families make.

Please complete a survey located at the top of the RSD website homepage as soon as you can, but no later than July 31 to give us time to plan for a successful 2020-21 school year!

*Plans may be adjusted over time to comply with changes to federal, state or county requirements.

RSD  will continue to provide you with updates throughout the summer to inform you of any changes and to provide you details regarding our safety protocols.
