The heart of our work as a school district is the learning and teaching that occurs every day in our classrooms. To guide teaching and learning Rochester School District has defined what we expect students to know and be able to do in order to ensure students have mastered the Washington State Grade Level Expectations (GLEs).

Rochester schools offer a wide range of learning opportunities including special assistance in basic skills, advanced placement courses for college credit, and professional technical courses for career paths. In addition to classroom instruction, extracurricular programs provide enrichment in academics, the arts, athletics, and areas of special interest to students.

Assessment of student learning is a big part of Rochester schools. The local assessments given in each building provide information to teachers, administrators and parents about the academic growth of students. In many cases the local assessments provide information and data to make sound decisions when dealing with inpiduals or groups of students. The local assessments will also allow the district to watch student growth over a period of time.

Statewide assessments are also given here in Rochester. Grades 3-8 take the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP). "The MSP name conveys the goal of the test: to measure student progress. State testing should never be the sole judge of a student’s academic skills and knowledge. A student’s entire performance should always be considered," (OSPI Website 2010). High School students take the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE). This test is given 10th grade students.
